Cleaning with dry ice has been used for several years. More commonly used are dry ice in pellet form or blocks using a shaving technology. Both technologies are subject to high investment costs and high running costs. These factors have so far been the obstacles for establishing themselves as a general cleaning process in the industries.
PolarTech´s patented technology is the solution to the problems above. The supply media is liquid CO2 or dry ice pellets and compressed air. The dry ice particles are accelerated in a jet of compressed air. PolarTech´s technology is using either liquid CO2 or dry ice pellets separately or in combination of both. The snow blasting we are creating our own “dry ice particles” during the cleaning process.
Dry ice blasting is meant to supplement or replace high-pressure cleaning like water, sand, glass and plastic or even hazardous chemicals and solvents. Dry ice blasting produces no secondary waste. Since the process is completely dry and non-conductive it can be used during production meaning no dismantling and costly downtime. Even cleaning hot surfaces is not a problem.
Dry ice blasting can be used for removing coatings like adhesives, varnish, oil, grease, dust, soot, mould release agents and bitumen to name a few. The technology can be used as pretreatment of surfaces before painting.
The cleaning mechanism of dry blasting involves 3 functions. Temperature, CO2 is – 79 celcius and therefor creating cracks on the surface material. Kinetic effect, on impact the particles will reach speeds up to 300 m/sec. Sublimation, when the dry ice particles hit a surface they expand 700 fold and thereby “blowing” of the surface material.
